SEMBAWANG TOWN PLAN - The Lifestyle Destination

My team and I are proud to present our Sembawang Town Plan 2030. We envision a Sembawang that is the new model town worthy of the title of World’s Best Place to live in. Here are our town's brief.

Our Vision: Sembawang - The Lifestyle destination

To all who call Sembawang home—now is the time to move boldly forward.

Let us shed the outdated image of being ‘far and forgotten’ and instead build a vibrant, connected, and inclusive town. A place where families flourish, communities thrive, and everyone can live with pride. Sembawang is not just where we live. It is where our best future can begin.

1. Public Transport That Works for All

While Sembawang may be the final stop on many MRT lines, it should never feel like the end of the road for residents. We propose enhanced transport connectivity, including direct bus or shuttle services to the city centre. Currently, missing a train can mean significant delays—with few alternatives available. Improved intra-GRC bus routes are also crucial, especially in areas like Canberra where access remains limited. Every neighbourhood deserves to be seamlessly connected.

2. A Lifestyle Destination, Not Just a Kampung

Sembawang’s rustic charm is part of its identity—but residents deserve more modern lifestyle amenities to match their evolving needs. A vibrant town centre with a proper shopping mall, diverse dining options, and entertainment facilities like cinemas or rooftop bars can bring life and energy to our evenings and weekends. We also envision weekend markets, pop-up food streets, and community bazaars that offer variety, promote small businesses, and strengthen our local identity.

3. Green Spaces That Inspire and Invite Sembawang’s natural beauty is a treasure—but let us elevate it. We propose developing well-lit, accessible walking trails, dog-friendly parks, and a safe, scenic coastal boardwalk for all ages to enjoy. Nature should be rejuvenating—not inaccessible. Cycling paths should be continuous and practical, linking key points within the GRC to encourage eco-friendly mobility.

4. A Stronger, More Inclusive Community

Spirit True community spirit goes beyond nostalgia—it grows when every resident feels seen, supported, and included. We aim to create more intergenerational community spaces where families, seniors, and youth can interact meaningfully. Think outdoor gyms beside playgrounds, and cafés near senior corners. We also propose decentralized co-working hubs, bringing flexible working options closer to home. And let's go beyond the occasional festival—cultural programming should be year-round, dynamic, and reflective of our rich diversity.

5. Supporting the Quiet Pillars of Our Society

Many in our midst work hard yet go unnotice—single parents, low-income families, and seniors living alone. Support must go beyond financial aid. We call for stronger community-based outreach, inclusive youth development programmes, and mentorship platforms to help every young person dream boldly and thrive. For our elderly, let's reimagine care centres as social clubs—places of activity, purpose, and joy, not simply facilities.

6. Unlocking the Potential of the Sembawang Hot Spring

The Sembawang Hot Spring is a national gem that remains underutilised. We envision transforming the area into a heritage and wellness destination: a spa village featuring reflexology paths, curated local food stalls, and educational programmes that celebrate its history. With guided tours, nature trails, and school visits, this can be a unique blend of tradition, relaxation, and learning for all.
