Hello Residents of Sembawang GRC,
I am Verina Ong. For the past decade, I have been in polytechnic classrooms, not just teaching, but listening. Listening to students share their hopes, doubts, and dreams. Listening to parents trying to do their best. Listening to the quiet voices that don’t always make it to the front of the room.
Before teaching, I worked across a wide range of industries, from FMCG to luxury retail to corporate training. I have seen Singapore through many lenses, and across every chapter of my career, one thing has always been clear: people come first.
My own journey started with a diploma from Temasek Polytechnic, followed by a degree and a Master of Science in International Management from Loughborough University in the UK. I don’t share this to impress, but to show how life-changing access to education can be. It shaped my path, and I want every young Singaporean to have that same chance.
That’s why I’m stepping into politics. Not to tear down what’s working, but to raise standards and bridge the gaps. Education is my starting point, not just because I am an educator, but because it connects everything that matters: mental wellness, social mobility, economic opportunity, and national identity. When we get education right, we raise confident thinkers, not just exam-takers. We shape a future where success isn’t reserved for the lucky few, but accessible to anyone willing to try.
But let’s be honest, our system is under pressure. Educators are stretched. Students are burning out. And too many families are struggling to keep up. I am here to fight for real support, real solutions, and real change, because I have seen firsthand how policies land in the lives of ordinary people.
I don’t come from a political dynasty. I come from the ground, from classrooms, homes, coffeeshops, and campus corridors. I am not here to promise perfection. I am here to serve with heart, honesty, and the humility to listen and learn.
Politics isn’t just about policy. It’s about people. And every story I have heard, every student I have met, every parent I have spoken to, they have all led me here.
Sembawang’s rustic charm is something I truly treasure, it’s part of what gives this town its heart. But I also believe we deserve more than just charm. We deserve vibrant, modern lifestyle options that reflect how our needs are evolving. If elected, our team will fight for the development of a proper town centre, with a well-equipped mall, diverse dining choices, and entertainment spaces like a cinema or rooftop bar, so families and friends can enjoy more of life right here at home.
I will also champion the creation of weekend markets, pop-up food streets, and community bazaars, spaces that support local businesses, young entrepreneurs, and give us meaningful ways to come together.
It’s time for Sembawang to grow into something new, something we can all be proud of. I would like to call it Kampung Chic Sembawang. A place where the warmth of yesteryear meets the energy of today. A town that keeps its community soul, but adds a touch of style. Where tradition and modern living walk side by side.
Let’s build a Sembawang that welcomes every generation. Let’s create a future where everyone moves ahead together.
Your future is our priority.
Let’s build it together.
Thank you
Verina Ong
